Primordial Serpent: Masculine Principle

€1,000.00

Primordial Serpent: Masculine Principle (2025), mixed media on canvas, 30x50 cm.

‘Primordial Serpent: Masculine Principle’ is a first painting in a two painting series exploring the concept of the cosmic serpent; a reoccurring symbol in many ancient cultures.

It was influenced by the hypothesis stemming from the research of Jeremy Narby, an anthropologist who drew the connection between the similarities in the shamanic teachings on the cosmic serpent and the modern day knowledge about micro organisms and the DNA; hypothesising that the cosmic serpent native shamans are interacting with during the states of altered consciousness is a conscious and self-aware aspect of the collective DNA.

Just like the double helix of the DNA, or the two snakes of the kundalini, the cosmic serpent is dual in its nature - both masculine and feminine. Which is why I split this idea into two paintings, each dedicated to a polarity of the primordial serpent; a creative force behind all life.

Even though the creative process behind this piece was intuitive, with little to no conscious planning, every element was created to embody the masculine energy and its defining qualities: intensity, action, power, sharpness, controlled movement, assertiveness. The colour palette of red, black and yellow emphasises emotions of anger and fiery passion through expressive, broad brush strokes.
